Class types in German courses

Small group with 5-10 participants

It is because our groups are small and homogenous that students taking our German language courses benefit from intensive and efficient learning. The small group sizes enable our students to make the most of the communicative context in the classroom to explore theory and put it into practice.

There is no shortage of opportunities for the exploration and clarification of grammar points, or for spoken interaction and speaking skills practice. It is not only our students who really appreciate working closely together in small groups - it also ensures that our teachers are able to cater to the needs of our individual learners, giving every student individual and targeted help and attention. This type of small group is a standard offer for each of our course profiles and levels.

Each day of tuition contains a grammar period and a conversation session, both of two lesson hours each, with a 15-minute break inbetween. All of our small groups benefit from our team-teaching approach, which means that your group will have two language trainers per week.

This means that you as a learner benefit from a high level of variation. You won't just be exposed to one speaker; instead you will hear different voices, experience different methods of communication and work with new and different topics and themes.

We are confident you will enjoy this extremely communicative style of learning German as you continuously make progress. With a combination of individual, pair and small group work you will be working on your speaking, listening, reading and writing skills, along with building your vocabulary and developing your understanding of German grammar. You will get to experiment and play around with the language, put what you have learnt into practice and improve your proficiency with the German language step by step.

Mini-group with 3-5 participants

In your afternoon mini-group, you will work together with between three and five fellow learners on a variety of projects and topics. These communicative elements will allow you to deepen your understanding of German and learn more about topics which are interesting to you personally.

This intensive project work allows you to broaden your knowledge and develop your speaking, writing and reading abilities in your target language in an engaging and stimulating learning environment. The projects change on a weekly basis and are based on topics related to German culture, politics, leisure activities and the richness of everyday life in Berlin. Our students are able to present much of the finished work they produce during the course of their projects in a student blog (• www.students.prolog-berlin.de).

Our strict limit of five learners per mini-group guarantees accelerated learning. Whatever your level, you will benefit from this even more active form of learning if you book our STANDARD PLUS or DE LUXE courses. It goes without saying that the more commitment you make in terms of personal initiative and energy will help you make the most of this optimal combination of fun and learning.

Individual tuition

Individual classes are designed exclusively to match the needs and meet the targets of an individual German language student. The pace and content of the course are agreed in consultation with you, the learner. This means that your teacher will develop a bespoke plan, a syllabus designed with your requirements at the heart of the course. One-to-one tuition is the quickest way to make really noticeable progress with a foreign language and this type of tuition will enable you to significantly expand and enhance your German language skills.

There are as many reasons for taking individual classes as there are different students at IH Berlin PROLOG: maybe you want to plan an exclusive German training course to help you in your job or because you are preparing for a particular exam; perhaps you want to improve your communication skills or work on a specific area of German grammar; or your interest is in Business German or there is a topic you are really interested in and want to explore during your language classes?

You can enrol for individual tuition as part of your COMBI 5, COMBI 10, DE LUXE and FIRST CLASS course.

Special courses

In addition to our classes in General German, we also offer special courses which focus on specific themes: Business German, literature, phonology, cultural studies and 'What I always wanted to know' are the core topics. These themes are dealt with in group sessions and are timetabled from 09:00-09:45 every weekday.

Included in the STANDARD PLUS and DE LUXE course profile are two special courses per week - you have free choice from the five seminars on offer each week. It is also possible to book the special seminars on a week-by-week basis irrespective of the course type you have chosen. You can do this easily enough in the school office.

Leisure and culture programme

When you're learning fast and working hard, you need some downtime as well as the chance to explore and get to know the city. Group activities, such as city tours, museum and gallery visits and trips to sporting events, are as much a part of our programme as our weekly film evening and pub visits.

It's entirely up to you how often you take advantage of the leisure and culture activities we organise. A PROLOG teacher accompanies every trip or visit and, apart from entrance charges, the activities are free.
