The Greek Language - A brief History

Modern Greek is one of the 21 official languages of the European Union. It is spoken by about 14.5 million native speakers, of which about 10.5 million live in Greece.

The other native speakers are spread throughout 35 other countries. On Cyprus, Greek is also an official language, next to Turkish. It is also recognized as a local official language or academic language.

Modern Greek belongs to the Indo-European language family and is descended from Classical Greek. Philologists usually refer to Modern Greek as of 1453 (the fall of Constantinople). Within the Indo-European language spoken today, Greek is considered an isolate, which means that no other language is closely related to it.

Until a few years ago, Modern Greek was divided into Dimotiki ( Δημοτική ), the vernacular Greek spoken today, and Katharevousa (the purified), which tends to reflect Classical Greek. Near the end of the Papadopoulos dictatorship, the Katharevousa form used as the official language was ended by a parliamentary order and today no longer plays a role other than in inscription and local names. The Dimotiki variation has prevailed as the spoken and written language in all aspects of life.

Modern Greek is comparatively uniform and only has a few dialects. A visitor to Greece is almost never confronted with a Greek citizen who cannot express themselves in Standard Modern Greek.
