Interesting facts about Portuguese
Portuguese is a language belonging to the Romance branch of the Indo-European language family, and along with Spanish, Catalan and the other languages of the Iberian peninsula form the smaller group of Ibero-Romance languages.
Together with Galician used in north-west Spain, Portuguese shares its origins in Galician-Portuguese, a language which developed up to the beginning of the Middle Ages. Following the formation of Portugal, two distinct languages developed from this common root.
Portuguese is spoken by approximately 190 million native speakers. When second language speakers are included, the figure rises to over 200 million. Portuguese spread widely during the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries as Portugal established its colonies, some of which didn't gain full independence until the 1970s and included Brazil, parts of the African continent and Macau.
As a consequence, Portuguese is the administrative language of a large number of independent countries and is taught and used as a second language in many of them. Alongside Portuguese there are approximately twenty Creole languages based upon Portuguese. As a result of emigration over the last few decades, Portuguese has become an important minority language across Western Europe and North America.
