Interesting facts about Russian

Russian is the most widely spoken Slavic language. Together with Ukrainian, Belarusian and Rusyn, Russian belongs to the East Slavic language group. Modern standard Russian is a direct descendent of the late fourteenth century Moscow vernacular.

Russian is spoken as a native language by around 145 million people, 130 million of which actually live in the Russian Federation. It is of course the official language of the Russian Federation but also shares official language status along side the titular languages in Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and the Autonomous Republic of Crimea to name a few.

Despite the enormous size of the Russian Federation there are less regional dialects than there are in, for example, France or Germany. Variances in pronunciation or syntax are never so great that two Russians from different regions can not understand each other.

Unlike Chinese or Vietnamese, Russian is not a tonal language. One important aspect of the language is the reduction of unstressed vowels, which is not entirely unlike that of English. Stress in Russian is generally quite unpredictable and can be placed on almost any syllable. Syllabic stress is one of the most difficult aspects for foreign language learners.

The Russian language maintains a dominant status in the world of science, art and technology - over a quarter of the world's scientific literature is published in Russian. Considering those who know Russian as a second language, there are approximately 260 million Russian speakers in the world today.
