Swedish - A short overview

Swedish, or Svenska, belongs to the Scandinavian languages and therefore to the group of European languages. Alongside Finnish, it is the official language of Finland. During the Middle Ages, Swedish was heavily influenced by Middle Low German, used by the Hanseatic League. Influences from High German were added to this through trade between Germany and the Baltic states, as well as through the Thirty Years War which is clearly demonstrated by the large number of military terms that have made their way into Swedish.

The Swedish alphabet has 29 characters. The letter W surfaces in borrowed words and until 2006 was not recognised as a letter in its own right, but as a variation of the letter V. Following the letter Z are the characters Å, Ä, and Ö, which are all recognised as distinct letters unlike in German where they are seen as variations of A and O.

Swedish is characterised by its distinctive vowel system. The length (or brevity) of the vowel sounds are used to determine meaning. Each syllable has either a long consonant or a long vowel. The combination of a short vowel with a long consonant is not found in Swedish.

Swedish is spoken by approximately 8.5 million native speakers, of which around 8 million live in Sweden and 290,000 live as a Finnish-Swedish minority in Finland.
