The language of hospitality
In July and August 2008, PROLOG will be offering vocational language courses in our StandardPlus format in German as a Foreign Language for the hotel, gastronomy and tourism industries.
PROLOG is a partner in the tri-international EU project TRIALOG (LEONARDO Programme). Together with partners in Poland and Turkey, we are developing course material for the hotel, gastronomy and tourism industry.
Language skills that are important for working in a hotel or restaurant will be the main focus in these German courses. We do this by combining language lessons in the school with practical training in a hotel and restaurant.
The participants should have knowledge of German equivalent to the level A2 or B1. The content-oriented lessons take place in the school on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 2 pm to 3:30 pm and consist of 2 lesson hours per day. On Wednesday, the participants try out their new-found knowledge at the Akademie Schmöckwitz, which is a renowned training provider for hospitality and gastronomy. The practical lessons there consist of three lesson hours.
On Monday and Tuesday, the participants work on their professional means of verbal expression and the corresponding specialized vocabulary. With the help of simulations and role playing, the participants prepare for their practical training.
During the practical part, we will be cooperating with the seminar and conference centre at the Akademie Schmöckwitz,
which runs hotels and restaurants in Berlin-Schmöckwitz and Berlin-Neukölln. As an additional partner, we were able to gain the well-known conference hotel NH Berlin-Mitte, which is located in the historic centre of Berlin.
Topics for the practical training include:
- Working as service in a restaurant: taking orders, food/drinks, description/recommendation, dealing with complaints, etc.
- Working at reception: greeting guests, taking phone calls, forwarding calls, giving information, making reservations, etc.
On Thursday and Friday, we discuss the experiences that the participants have had during the practical training sessions. At the same time, the language skills that are essential for working in a hotel and/or restaurant will be reviewed.
