Großes Deutsches Sprachdiplom (GDS)

Major German Language Diploma

Successfully passing the Großes Deutsches Sprachdiplom (GDS) demonstrates a near native-speaker mastery of the language. In order to reach this level, you will normally need at least 1500 teaching hours behind you.

The GDS is recognised by private and public sector employers all over the world. It is the highest qualification in the field of German as a Foreign Language, and is only surpassed by translator and interpreter qualifications awarded by universities.

As with the ZOP and the KDS, passing the GDS means that you do not have to take a separate language entrance exam for college or university, as you have already more than demonstrated your language abilities. The GDS is also accepted as proof of your language abilities if you are a teacher from within the EU who wants to work in Germany.

You can take both exams, the KDS and GDS, at any of the Goethe Institute examination centres, either here in Germany, or internationally. We would be happy to answer any questions you might have.
