STANDARD PLUS German course

On our STANDARD PLUS German as a foreign language course, you will spend 30 tuition hours per week as part of a group of international learners all sharing the goal of improving their German language skills. Your German course takes place daily (Monday to Friday) and is a blend of small group classes, with between five and ten students per group, and mini-group classes, with between 3 and 5 students.

In the STANDARD PLUS German course, you can choose from three different focal topics (course variations). Please tell us when you're booking the course which variation you would prefer.

Recommended for:

Our STANDARD PLUS course profile is designed for motivated learners with at least some previous knowledge of German (A1 to C2 levels are catered for). You will increase and improve your German language skills through an intensive programme of communicative lessons in small and mini-groups. In addition to your classroom hours, we've also made space in your timetable to make the most of our culture programme and still have enough time to explore Berlin for yourself.

Course variations:

PLUS - Berlin

In the “Berlin“ variation, the participants go on a discovery tour through German history and culture with the help of various media.

Every week, the participants deal with different topics, such as art, architecture, literature or everyday culture. The starting point for this course is the German capital, Berlin. But don't worry; it's not mainly about numbers and facts, rather about the language-orientated discourse around the subject of culture.

• Berlin today • Film / TV • The Berlin Wall / GDR •
• Youth culture / Subculture • Art • Migration / Turkish Berlin •
• Everyday life in Berlin / Communication • National Socialism •
• Reading / Literature • Religion / Jewish Berlin •

To participate in this course, the participants are required to have previous knowledge of German equivalent to 150 lesson hours (not lower than A2). The STANDARD PLUS German course “Berlin“ is offered on the first Monday of every month and can be booked for up to 12 weeks.

PLUS - Business

In the STANDARD PLUS variation “Business“, the participants have weekly topics, such as professional education and training in Germany, working conditions, taxes, social insurance, type of companies, banks, marketing and promotion of trade and industry, contracts, and permits.

Emphasis is placed on the language-orientated discourse about such topics as work, economy and career, learning relevant terminology and industry-orientated training of typical communication situations, both orally and written. The participants research the subjects and prepare short, regular presentations.

• Job applications / CVs / Job interviews • Types of companies •
• Employment conditions / Employment law •
• Advertising and Marketing • Globalisation / Import and Export •
• Workflows and division of responsibilities within companies •

To participate in this course, the participants are required to have previous knowledge of German equivalent to 450 lesson hours (not lower than B1). The STANDARD PLUS German course “Business“ can be started on the first Monday in the month and can be booked for up to 12 weeks.

PLUS - Hotel and Gastronomy

The “Hotel and Gastronomy“ variation gives students the technical vocabulary and typical phases needed in the industry. They are trained in role-playing, communication situations such as at the reception desk or in the restaurant. Furthermore, the students deal with tasks, such as customer queries, telephone notes, or responses to complaints.

• In a restaurant • In the city • On holiday •
• Job applications • Complaints • At reception •
• Dealing with colleagues and superiors • Presentation •

To participate in this course, the participants are required to have previous knowledge of German equivalent to 150 lesson hours (level A1-A2). The STANDARD PLUS German course “Hotel and Gastronomy“ can be booked for 2-4 weeks.

Scope and content:

The four tuition hours each morning in small groups are structured to give you two units each with two tuition hours (90 minutes) during which the main focus is on language systems (grammar). In the lessons which follow, you will then have plenty of individual and group work and practise to make sure you retain and use what you have learned. Your language instruction will cover each of the four main language skills: speaking, listening, reading and writing in the German language.

After a lunch break, there are two more tuition hours that take place in mini-groups. Working together with your fellow students on projects and group activities will make sure that you improve your German speaking, writing and listening abilities. The projects change on a weekly basis and involve topics dealing with German culture, politics and the varied facets of life in Berlin.

In order to avoid getting too fixated on the style and approach of a single teacher, we organise our courses so that you will be taught by at least two different teachers per week - you will benefit from more stimulation, variety of communication styles and a broader spectrum of topics. In addition, four ears pick up on things that two ears might miss! This means that we can better assess your German language skills and more accurately evaluate your progress.

Schedule:

On our STANDARD PLUS German course you are part of a small group from 10:00-13:15, with a fifteen-minute break between two tuition blocks of 90 minutes. This break will provide you with the chance to try out your German skills with members of other classes.

Following a 45-minute lunch break, you will have an additional two tuition hours as part of a mini-group. The mini-groups meet every weekday apart from Wednesdays, from 14:00 to 15:30. As Wednesday afternoon is reserved for the culture programme, to make up for the two other tuition hours, you have a free choice of two of the five special seminars we offer from Monday to Friday between 09:00 and 09:45.
